Family
A girl watched fascinated from afar,
At all the people getting out of their cars.
Every Sunday she watched all the families,
Who were dressed in their Sunday best.
She often wondered why they came
And what were their names.
She was one of many that lived in an orphanage nearby.
She dreamed of one day having a beautiful dress,
For she always looked a mess.
Not that she minded, but she sure wished she had a family of her own.
But the possibility was unlikely because she was almost grown.
One Sunday she slipped into the door of the church just to look around.
She saw pews and books, so she sat down.
She saw one that said Holy Bible and the other one had songs.
She was so lost in thought; she never heard the footsteps that came along.
She was startled when a voice softly spoke, and asked, “what are you doing here child?”
She looked up at the man a little afraid,
But when she saw him she knew there was nothing to fear.
She answered by saying, I know I am not supposed to be here.
I just wanted to see why others came.
He thought for a moment and said they come to worship God.
And you are welcome to come anytime you want.
She looked at her clothes with a sigh and spoke such meager words,
Saying I have nothing fancy to wear.
The wise old man said it is not what is on the outside that God sees,
It’s what’s in our hearts.
That next Sunday as she walked through the door she had never felt such warmth.
The people where smiling and welcomed her in,
she heard beautiful words when they sang those old hymns.
But it was the sermon that was preached that stuck in her mind.
She continued to come and here his words about a man who loved all.
The day came when she walked the aisle to accept God’s grace and the spirit entered her heart.
She realized then and there that He had given her a fresh start.
But most importantly God had given her the one thing she had wanted: Family
